Just Thinking About Headaches is Depressing
Talk about a downward spiral! Most people would agree that being in pain is
upsetting. One type of pain, in particular, creates a mental felling of helplessness.
That pain is headache pain. It's terribly difficult to determine which comes
first, the headache or the distress. What's certain is, once the headache starts,
the distress is sure to follow. This added stress frequently increases the pain
that increases the stress, thus creating a vicious downward spiral, when your head hurts, it's hard just to think straight. Headaches that are frequent or
last for days, sometimes with no relief, easily cause depression.
Many people have a cupboard full of little bottles that haven't been able to
solve the problem. Too frequently these headache sufferers are tired of doctors
telling them it's "all in your head," that it's some kind of "mental problem,"
or that they can't find a thing wrong physically.
This downward spiral may result in poor posture owing to pain and misery, failure
to take care of themselves, work loss (which creates financial stress), and,
without question, the inability to enjoy life as a healthy person would. Many
people have had to give up the things they love best because of the pain or
because of the medication taken to try to lessen the pain temporarily. Chiropractors
know how well the body can heal if given a chance, and if there is no interference
to health. Research has shown that chiropractic works on many types of headaches,
including migraines and tension headaches. For example:
--An extensive study done on chiropractic for the government of New Zealand
found that "...spinal manipulation therapy (chiropractic adjustments) can
be effective in relieving musculo-skeletal symptoms such as back pain and...migraines."
--In 1989, a study by the Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies compared
one group of headache sufferers who receive chiropractic adjustments with
another group that was given a common antidepressant medication. Both groups
improved during the test period. However, after the study concluded, the
group that received chiropractic reported fewer headaches and less pain, and
viewed their health status as improved follow-up interviews indicated
that . The group that received only medication returned to their pre-test
health status.
Chiropractic can help eliminate the cause of many people's headaches and the
depression that goes with them. Call. We want to help.
