PAIN and NUMBNESS
My Arms and Hands Have "Gone to Sleep"
Pain and numbness in the arms and hands can have a number of causes, but one
of the more common contributing factors is pressure on the spinal nerves in
the neck and upper back areas which supply nerve energy to the arms and hands.
Spinal nerve pressure may be the result of old injuries (falls, blows or whiplashes)
which can produce spinal misalignments or subluxations. These spinal subluxations
can be intensified or made worse by combinations of physical and emotional stress.
The pressure on spinal nerves can be so slight that the individual may be
totally unaware of it until the pressure is increased due to stresses involving
the neck and shoulder muscles.
Temporary relief may be obtained by relaxing the muscles with therapy and/or
drugs, but the most effective and long-lasting relief will usually be obtained
through gentle spinal adjustments to reduce the pressure on the nerves.
Spinal X-rays of the neck and back along with neurological and orthopedic
tests help pinpoint the problem areas and will reveal the degree and extent
of the spinal subluxations. These examinations will also help in determining
the treatment time necessary to relieve and correct the problem.
Anyone experiencing recurring numbness and/or pain in the arms and hands should
have a chiropractic check-up. Call our office today.
