WHIPLASH
I Really Didn't Know What It Was
BUT I DO NOW!!

This is a daily statement being made by new members of the "Whiplash Club." The term "whiplash" is such a common term to the general populace, but only after one has had the unfortunate experience, is the true understanding really felt.

Millions of people visit chiropractic office each year. a good percentage of them have had whiplash injuries. 15% to 30% of car occupants involved in auto accidents will sustain a whiplash injury resulting in neck pain.

Whiplash injuries are the result of the head and neck being snapped suddenly in one direction and then in the opposite direction. The injury can be more severe if the head and neck are turned slightly to the right of left when the injury occurs.

Symptoms may appear as soreness and stiffness of the neck and can be accompanied by headaches. There may also be pain and/or numbness between the shoulder blades and down into the arms and hands. Other complaints can be ringing in the ears, dizziness and blurred vision.

A whiplash can range from mild to severe. A severe injury can result in tearing of muscles and ligaments which attach to the neck vertebrae, the head and shoulders. The severe whiplash can produce excruciating pains upon the slightest movement of the head and neck. A cough, sneeze or sudden movement can be almost unbearable!!

Following a whiplash injury, and after it has been determined that it is not a life-threatening injury involving broken bones, hemorrhaging or internal organ damage, the individual involved should have a chiropractic spinal examination to determine if any of the individual segments of the spine have been forced out of their normal alignment.

These misaligned vertebrae are called spinal subluxations and can result in pressure on the nerves where they emit from in between the vertebrae. When subluxations are involved, the neck muscles often spasm in their attempt to realign the spine. Drugs and muscle relaxants may provide temporary relief by numbing the symptoms, but if drugs are used in place of, or instead of, realigning the spine, the injury may become chronic with recurring aches and pains for many years!
